Biography:
A Pilot’s Life James Dewey Carroll moved to Elkins at the age of 12 with his parents George Dewey and Eva Catherine Spence Carroll, sister Mary Margaret and brother Donald Lee. The family lived at 100 Guy Street in a large home not far from Davis & Elkins College. “Jim” graduated from Elkins High School, where he was active in Hi-Y, 4-H, Boy Scouts and the band. He and his family attended the Methodist Church. In September 1940, he enrolled in Davis & Elkins College AT D&E, Jim was a pre-med student, a member of Chi Beta Phi National Scientific Fraternity, Student Christian Association and Playcrafters. As an enlistee in the U.S. Air Force, he was inducted into service in the second semester of his junior year. Jim participated in Army Air Corps training at Centre College, Kentucky, in a program like the one at D&E. On May 24, 1944, he received his wings as a second lieutenant. Two days later, he married Dorothy Burbridge Slaymaker, a young woman he had known since childhood. After two months training with his crew at Sioux City, Iowa, and eleven days at home, he flew to England where he was stationed with the Eighth Air Force at Framlingham-Parham Village. He flew the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. He was promoted to first lieutenant, and an oak leaf cluster was added to his air medal for “courageous achievement in the Eight Air Force’s stepped-up bombing offensive against German industrial and military targets,” specifically in its “epic mission against aircraft plants at Regensburg, Germany.” In early March 1945, his wife received a telegram that Jim was reported missing in action on February 14 in Germany. She shortly learned that his plane had been shot down by flak and that Jim had been killed. He was awarded the Purple Heart. His remains were returned and interred at Elkins Maplewood Cemetery on January 26, 1949. Following the close of WWII, Jim was honored by the charter members of Elkins’ first Air Explorer Squadron of the Boy Scouts of America. The unit was named ALWOCA in memory of Jim, Naval Lieutenant Charles E. Albert, Jr., and Naval Lieutenant James J. Wood, using the first two letters of the pilots’ last names. Jim’s young wife, Dottie, later married Owen Lutz, D&E Class of 1948, and became curator of the College’s Darby Collection. His sister, Mary Margaret Carroll Woodward Morrison, graduated from D&E in 1944 and became College Librarian, serving for 26 years. She lives, today, in the family home on Guy Street. The third Carroll child, Don, also attended Davis & Elkins College.
