A. EXPLOITATION OF THE BREAKTHROUGH
1. Rapid Advance South. The 111th Field Artillery Battalion conti9nued in direct support of the 116thInfantry Regiment in the rapid advance to the South following the breakthrough out of NORMANDY. By 8 August 1944 approximately twenty-three kilometers had been covered and secured, including the liberation of the city of VIURE and the high ground East and South of the city. The Battalion followed in close support displacing daily during the first four days of the advance and each second day thereafter (See Map 6F/4 & 6F/6). Enemy resistance stiffened upon approaching the city of VIRE.Firing during the period consisted of call missions during daylight and harassing fires during the hours of darkness. A total of 340 missions with a total expenditures of 4.409 rounds were fired. |

2. General Support 29thDivision.
At 17.00B hours 9 August 1944, 116th Infantry having been relieved and placed in Division reserve, this Battalion was assigned the mission of general support of the 29thDivision continuing the advance to the South. Reconnaissance and displacement was accomplished during the hours of darkness from positions near LE CHONNAU (611331) North of VIRE to positions South of VIRE (617297) closing at 02.30B hours 10 August 1944.On 11 August 1944 the Battalion was assigned the mission of reinforcing the fires of the 224th Field Artillery Battalion and was relieved of same at 18.00B hours 12 August 1944 when the 116th Combat Team was ordered into FIRST U S ARMY reserve. Ninety-six missions with a total expenditure of 1.363 rounds were fired during this period. |
August 13-16
|
3. FIRST U S ARMY Reserve.
The 116th Infantry occupied defensive positions South and West of VIRE and on 13 August 1944 the Battalion displaced to new positions North of VIRE (621346) with the missions of direct support of the 116th Infantry. Contact with the enemy not appearing imminent the period 13-16 August 1944 was utilized for rehabilitation and entertainment. Ordnance inspections and necessary repairs were completed on small arms, materiel, vehicles, and fire control instruments. The personnel of the Battalion were entertained with movies, Red Cross Clubmobile, and a U S Show. No missions were fired during this period. |
August 16-21

4. Defense of 29thDivision sector.
On 16 August 1944 the 116th Combat Team reverted to Division control and was assigned the mission of defending the Division sector. The Battalion marched as a combat team attachment and occupied positions near FREDEVILLE (702188, Map 6G/2) in direct support of the 116th Infantry. The Division reverted to XIX Corps on 17 August 1944 and since there was no contact with the enemy, rehabilitation and training was continued until 21 August 1944 when preparations were begun for movement to another front. No combat missions were fired during the period. |

B. NORMANDY TO BRITTANY
The Division was attached to the VIII Corps, THIRD U S ARMY and marched in a Division column from NORMANDY to BRITTANY on 21-23 August 1944. This Battalion marched as a 116th Combat Team attachment, passed the IP at 06.55B hours, 22 August 1944, and closed in position near PLOUDALMEZEAU, BRITTANY FRANCE (846142, Map 2G/2) at 21.00B hours the same date. A march of 240 miles was completed in 14 hours. No mechanical failures of equipment were experienced and only two minor accidents occurred. |
August 24-31
|
On 24 August 1944 the VIII Corps began the reduction of the Fortress BREST, BRITTANY. The 116thInfantry marched Couth and the Battalion, in direct support, occupied positions North of MILIZAC (881101, Map 2G/2). Contact was made with the outer defenses East of LANNIVOARE (848098, Map 2F/5 * 2G/1). Steady progress was made and this Battalion displaced to new positions South of MILIOZAC (892068, Map 2G/2) on 26 August 1944.During the hours of darkness 27-28 August 1944, the 116th Infantry was relieved by the 115th Infantry and marched to positions West of BREST. The Battalion displaced to positions South of ST. RENAN (860040, Map 2F/5 & 2G/1) on 28 August 1944 to support the attack from the West. It was found that the 105mm howitzer was ineffective against strong enemy fortifications and gun emplacements encountered in the defenses of BREST. The observers of this Battalion employed and adjusted heavy Corps Artillery including 155mmm, 240mm and a 8 inch howitzers on such targets with excellent effect. In cases where the exact coordinates of the enemy installations were not known, one gun of the 111thFA Battalion was adjusted and the correct coordinates obtained from the re-plotted data prior to requesting the heavy artillery. This practice saved ammunition and time in adjusting the larger caliber artillery. Some progress was made in the face of strong enemy fortifications as of midnight 31 August 1944. |
Enemy Forces
|
Enemy Forces on our front were those units which opposed the 116thInfantry Regiment.Enemy Artillery was comparatively light prior to the liberation of VIRE. It consisted mainly of self-propelled guns and tanks firing spasmodically on front line positions. During the occupation of VIRE and prior to the capture of the high ground South of the city, enemy artillery fire combined with considerable amount of mortar fire, was heavy within the city. The city of BREST was heavily defended by various types and calibers of artillery dug-in or emplaced in heavily fortified positions. Self-propelled guns employing the ‘shoot and run’ tactics from close in positions were present. Heavy coast defense guns permanently emplaced were employed against pour ground troops and on counter battery missions. AA batteries (Anti Aircraft) were employed as field pieces, occasionally firing time fire over our front line elements, and in some instances were used as direct fire weapons. |

A. FIRING RECORDS
A total of 900 missions with an expenditure of 13.044 rounds were fired during the month of August 1944. B. TANK-ARTILLERY TIME FIRE DEMONSTRATION On 17 August the Battalion participated in a tank-artillery demonstration in which time fire was placed approximately 30 yards above the advancing tanks. Upon signal the tanks moved forward; and after advancing a distance of two fields, time fire was started and continued until the tanks reached their objective. Five medium tanks advanced, completely buttoned up, and upon reaching their objective, remained on it while a like number of tanks advanced similarly. About midway during the advance of the medium tanks, three graze burst occurred and the height of burst was then raised an additional 10 yards and fire for effect continued. Just prior to light tanks reaching their objective, four of five graze bursts occurred out of approximately 12 rounds. A total of seventy-two rounds were fired in the demonstration.Upon interrogation of the tank commanders at the termination of the exercise, it was discovered that fragments fall upon 3 of 5 of medium tanks, but on none of the light tanks. No damage was inflicted. It is recommended that in the employment of such tactics a heights of burst of not less than 40 to 60 yards in the air be employed. Cannoneers must exercise the greatest caution and precision in cutting of time fuses in order to lessen the possibility of obtaining graze bursts which might cause direct hits upon our own tanks. There are 4 prerequisites for such tactics:
|
Battle lesson | Observers of this Battalion have found it necessary to employ heavy caliber Corps Artillery on the strong fortifications encountered. In such cases where the exact coordinates of the target are unknown, it has been found desirable to adjust one gun of the 105mm Battalion and obtain the correct coordinates of the target from re-plotted adjusted data prior to requesting the heavy artillery. This practice saves time and large caliber ammunition. |

A. UITBUITING VAN DE DOORBRAAK
1. Snelle opruk zuidwaarts.

Augustus 13-16
|
3. FIRST U S ARMY Reserve.
Augustus 16-21
|

A. FIRING RECORDS
