July 1944

The 111^th FA Battalion continued in direct support of the 116^th Infantry defending the high ground, Hill 120, North of St. André de L’Epine which had been seized on June 20, 1944. The action of this Battalion for the period of July 1 to July 10 consisted mainly of harassing and defensive fires in front of the 116^thInfantry sector with exception of the following instances worthy of note:

• July 2, 1944:

A tactical displacement was ordered and executed from positions East of St. Clair-sur-L’Elle to positions Northwest of Couvains in preparation for an attack to seize the high ground East of St. Lo. An attack was launched by the enemy in the right sector of the 116^th Infantry Regiment during this displacement. “A” and “C” Battery had completed occupation of the new position, registered  and taken over the defensive mission. The remainder of the Battalion then displaced. The attack was repulsed.

• July 4, 1944:

In commemoration of independence day a Battalion volley was fired at 12.00 B hours. An associated Press photographer recorded the incident by photographing the action of a gun section of “A” Battery. The picture appeared in numerous papers throughout the united States .

• July 7, 1944:

The Battalion participated in a false diversionary preparation, fired in front of the Division, beginning at 04.15 B hours and coordinated with an artillery preparation prior to an attack by the 30^th Division on the right.

On June 11 1944 the 29^th infantry Division launched a coordinated attack to seize the high ground overlooking St. Lo. The 116^thInfantry Regiment (reinforced) attacked from positions North of St. André de L’Epine with the initial mission of seizing objections “C”, “D” and “H” (Hills 150 and 147).An elaborate artillery plan was prepared including a preparation prior to the attack and 100 call missions for support during the attack. Most of the call missions were battery concentrations plotted on the hedgerows and sunken roads in successive bands or lines along the axis of the infantry advance. This enabled the advancing infantry to have almost continuous artillery fire from 100 to 200 yards in front of them.

• July 11, 1944 at 06.00B hours the initial rounds of the artillery preparation were fired. The Battalion fired a total of 9 missions in the preparation with an expenditure of 278 rounds.
• July 11, 1944: supporting the attack. The Battalion fired a total of 3117 rounds this date as a direct support to the attack in the area with the difficulty of hedgerows; this artillery support  proved to be of great value in this type of terrain.
• July 12-18, 1944. The attack was continued throughout this period and the Battalion remained in direct support to the 116^th Infantry Regiment in their attack to objectives near and the town itself of Martinsville. On July 14 a tactical displacement was executed to a new position in  vicinity of St. André de l’Epine ; this position was closer to the front line (in mortar range). On July 17 the Battalion was successful in defeating the enemy during their counterattack to the 116^th Infantry Regiment. The Cub Planes were used extensively throughout the attack on ST. Lo and on 2 occasions they dropped much-needed blood plasma to the Battalions cut off , exposing themselves on both occasions to heavy machine gun and small arms fire. The Battalion fired 489 missions with a total expenditure of 11.684 rounds during the period July 11 to 18, 1944, which concluded with the liberation of St. Lo.

• July 20, 1944:

The Battalion displaced by infiltration to a position in the vicinity of Belle Fontaine from the positions south of St. André de L’Epine

• No missions were fired during the period of July 19 to 23 1944 other than registration.

• A tactical displacement was ordered and executed on July 23 1944 from positions near Belle Fontaine to new positions in the vicinity of Couvains.
• At 09.30 B Hours on July 24, 1944 the Battalion was assigned the mission of reinforcing the fires of the 38^th Field Artillery Battalion, 2^nd Division, V Corps. A few missions were fired during this attachment.
• This mission was terminated at 22.00 B hours on July 27, 1944 when a message was received from the Commanding General, 29^th Division artillery, ordering this Battalion on a non-operational status. Preparations were initiated to march with the 29^th Division to position areas South of St. Lo on July 28, 1944.

• July 28, 1944:

The 29^th infantry Division marched South in 2 columns through St. Lo. The Battalion marched as a 116^th Infantry Regiment attachment on route Y, passed the IP at 19.21 B hours and closed in position areas vicinity of Brioult at 00.20 B hours on July 29, 1944.

• July 29, 1944:

Reconnaissance was completed shortly after daylight and occupation of positions in vicinity of Le Mesnil Herman was completed at 11.30 B hours. The battalion mission was direct support of the 116^th Infantry Regiment then advancing to the South. At 23.00 B hours the Battalion area was subjected to an enemy attack resulting in 1 casualty in “C” Battery.

• July 30, 1944:

At 05.00 B hours a second aerial attack was launched, Service Battery area receiving the major portion. Casualties resulting from the above attack were as follows:

• Personnel: 3
• Material: 5  2 ½ ton 6×6 ammunition  trucks

5  M10 trailers destroyed with an additional loss of 1.000 rounds of 105mm ammunition. Other vehicles and ammunition was saved by moving them to a other save location

• July 31, 1944:

From 01.15B hours to 01.50B Hours the Battalion area was subjected to another aerial attack with the following casualties and damage:

• Personnel: 3
• Material: 1  2 ½ ton 6×6 ammunition truck (Battery “A”)

The Battalion returned to Division Artillery control at 08.00B hours. An artillery preparation was fired in front of the 1^st Battalion of the 116^th Infantry Regiment prior to an attack on Moyen; the attack was unsuccessful.

A total of 826 missions were fired during the month of July with a total expenditure of 17. 189 rounds.

1. Ground Troops:

1. Enemy ground troops on the front up to and including the liberation of St. Lo consisted mainly of the 8^th Para Regiment, 9^th Para Regiment and elements of an Engineer Battalion, all of which were elements of the 3^rd Para Division.
2. Enemy troops encountered south of St. Lo consisted of the 304^th Regiment of the 2^nd Panzer Division and a Battle Group known as The Kampfgruppe Kentner which was made up of remnants of the 256^th and 353^rd Infantry Divisions.
3. Enemy Artillery became more active but consisted mainly of self-propelled guns operating individually. A few battalions concentrations were noted during the period. Firing was still spasmodic, generally on front line positions; that received in rear areas was interdiction and harassing fires. No counter battery was experienced although some rounds did fall occasionally within the battalion area.

2. Air Force/Luftwaffe:

Three night bombing attacks by the Luftwaffe resulted in some casualties and damage.

Het 111th Battalion bleef in directe koppeling tot het 116th Infantry Regiment ter verdediging van de hoge delen, Hill 120, ten noorden van St. André de l’Epine, welke veroverd werd op 20 juni 1944. De activiteiten van het Battalion gedurende de periode 1 tot 10 juli bestond voornamelijk uit beschietingen van het front voor de 116th Infantry sector, met uitzondering van de volgende noemenswaardige acties:

• 2 juli, 1944:

Om tactische redenen werd het Battalion verplaatst van posities oostelijk van St. Clair-sur-l’Elle naar posities noordwestelijk van Couvains; dit ter voorbereiding op een aanval om de hoge gebieden oostelijk van St. Lo te veroveren. De Duitsers voerden tijdens deze verplaatsing een aanval uit in de rechter flank van het 116^th Infantry Regiment. “A” en “C” battery verplaatsen zich als eerste van de 111^th FA; nadat zij zich geinstalleerd hadden en tot actie konden overgaan verplaatste zich de rest van de 111th FA. De Duitse aanval werd afgeslagen.

• 4 juli, 1944:

In het kader van de viering van Independence Day  vuurde het Battalion salvo’s af om 12.00 uur. Een persfotograaf maakte een opname van dit gebeuren bij de kanonnen van de “A” Battery. Deze foto verscheen in talrijke kranten en magazines door de hele Verenigde Staten.

• 7 juli, 1944:

Het Battalion deed mee aan afleidingsmanoeuvres ter voorbereiding, afgevuurd op het front voor de Division, beginnende om 04.15 uur en gecoördineerd met een artillerie voorbereiding voorafgaande aan een aanval door de 30^th Division op de rechter flank.

Op 11 juni, 1944 startte de 29^th Infantry Division met een gecoördineerde aanval om de hoge gebieden uitkijkend op St. Lo te veroveren. Het 116^thInfantry Regiment (versterkt) viel aan vanuit posities noordelijk van St. André de l’Epine met als eerste doel de gebieden “C”, “D” en “H” te veroveren (Hills 150 en 147).Een uitgebreid Artillerie plan werd voorbereid en uitgevoerd voorafgaande aan de aanval met 100 missies ter ondersteuning van de aanval. Het merendeel van deze Artillerie missies kwam terecht op de heggen en verzonken holle wegen in lijnen liggende voor de frontlinie van de Infantry Division. Dit had als resultaat dat de Infanterie continue Artillerie beschietingen 100 tot 200 yards voor hun frontlinie als ondersteuning had.

• 11 juli, 1944 om 06.00 uur werden de eerste Artillerie beschietingen als voorbereiding afgevuurd. Het Battalion vuurde in totaal 9 missies af ter voorbereiding met een totaal van 278 schoten.
• 11 juli, 1944: ondersteuning van de aanval.  Het Battalion vuurde in totaal 3.117 schoten op deze dag als directe ondersteuning van de aanval in dit gebied met de moeilijkheid van de hagen en holle wegen; deze artillerie ondersteuning bleek uiteindelijk van grote waarde bij aanvallen in dit type terrein.
• 12 – 18 juli, 1944. De aanval werd gecontinueerd tijdens deze periode en het Battalion bleef actief als directe ondersteuning van het 116^th Infantry Regiment in hun aanval op posities rond en in de stad Martinsville. Op 14 juli werd als een tactische zet het Batallion verplaatst naar nieuwe positie in de buurt van St. André de l’Epine; deze positie was dichter bij de frontlinie (op mortierafstand). Op 17 juli was het Battalion succesvol met het verslaan van de Duitse tegenval op het 116th Infantry Regiment. De Cub Planes, verkenningsvliegtuigjes, werden intensief gebruikt gedurende de gehele aanval op St. Lo als verkenningspost.  Tevens werden ze enkele malen ingezet om het noodzakelijke bloedplasma te droppen bij de fronteenheden welke afgesneden waren van de achterhoede bevoorrading. Deze vliegtuigjes stelden zich voortdurend kwetsbaar op door zich bloot te geven aan vijandelijk vuur.  Het Battalion vuurde 489 missies af met een totaal van  11.684 schoten  gedurende de periode 11 tot en met 18 juli 1944 met als resultaat de bevrijding van St. Lo.

Na de bevrijding van St. Lo door de 29^th Infantry Division was het Battalion relieved en werd het toegewezen als algemene ondersteuning aan de 320^th Infantry van de 35^th Division; ze dienden als versterking van de beschietingen door het 224^th Field Artillery Battalion welke als doel hadden de directe ondersteuning van verdediging van positie “D” door de 320^thInfantry.

• 20 juli, 1944:

Het Battalion verplaatse zich vanuit de positie zuidelijk van St. André de l’Epine naar een nieuwe positie in de buurt van Belle Fontaine.

• In de periode van 19 tot en met 23 juli 1944 werden geen missies afgevuurd.

• Een tactische verplaatsing werd opgedragen en uitgevoerd op 23 juli 1944 vanuit de posities bij Belle Fontaine naar nieuwe posities in de buurt van Couvains.
• Om 09.30 uur op 24 juli 1944 werd het Battalion toegewezen aan de missie ter versterking van de beschietingen door het 38^th Field Artillery Battalion, 2^nd Division, V Corps. Een aantal missies warden afgevuurd tijdens deze koppeling.
• Deze missie werd afgesloten om 22.00 uur op 27 juli 1944, nadat er een telegram ontvangen werd van de Commanding General, 29^th Division artillery; in dit telegram werd het Battalion tijdelijk op non-actief gezet. Voorbereidingen werden getroffen om samen met de 29^th Infantry Division op te marcheren naar het gebied zuidelijk van St. Lo op 28 juli 1944.

• 28 juli, 1944:

De 29^th Infantry Division marcheerde zuidwaarts in 2 colonnes door St. Lo. Het Battalion marcheerde als onderdeel van het 116^th Infantry Regiment via route Y, passeerde het IP  om 19.21 uur en arriveerde op hun bestemming in de buurt van Brioult om 00.20 uur op 29 juli 1944.

 29 juli, 1944:

Verkenningen werden afgerond kort na daglicht en het betrekken van de positie in de nabijheid van Le Mesnil Herman was afgerond om 11.30 uur. Het Battalion vormde weer de directe ondersteuning van het 116th Infantry Regiment dat oprukte naar het zuiden. Om 23.00 uur waren de stellingen van het Battalion doelwit van een vijandelijke aanval met als gevolg 1 slachtoffer in “C” Battery.

• 30 juli, 1944:

Om 5.00 uur volgde een 2e luchtaanval waarbij Service Battery het voornaamste slachtoffer was. Verliezen van deze aanval waren als volgt:

• Personeel: 3
• Materiaal: 5  2 ½ ton 6×6 ammunition  trucks

5  M10 trailers werden vernietigd met een totaal verlies van 1.000 granaten van 105mm munitie. Andere voertuigen en munitie warden in veiligheid gebracht door ze te verplaatsen naar veilige gebieden.

• 31 juli, 1944:

Van 01.15 tot 01.50 uur was de positie van het Battalion nog eens doelwit van een luchtaanval met de volgende verliezen en schade:

• Personeel: 3
• Materaal: 1  2 ½ ton 6×6 ammunition truck (Battery “A”)

Het Battalion keerde terug naar Division Artillery Control om 08.00 uur. Een Artillerie voorbereiding werd afgevuurd voor de frontlinie van het 116th Infantry Regiment voorafgaande aan de aanval op Moyen; de aanval was uiteindelijk niet succesvol.

In totaal werden er 826 missies gevuurd gedurende de maand juli met een totaal van 17.189 schoten.

1. Vijandelijke grondtroepen aan het front naar en tijdens de bevrijding van St. Lo bestonden voornamelijk uit het 8^th Para Regiment, 9^th Para Regiment en onderdelen van een  Engineer Battalion; al deze groepen waren onderdeel van de  3^rd Para Division.
2. Vijandelijke troepen ten zuiden van St. Lo bestonden uit het 304^th Regiment van de 2^nd Panzer Division en een Battle Group bekend onde de naam “Kampfgruppe Kentner”, welke bestond uit overblijfselen van de 256^th and 353^rd Infantry Divisions.
3. Vijandelijke Artliiery werd meer aktief, maar bestond voornamelijk uit individueel opererende self-propelled guns. Enkele gezamelijke acties door artillerie werden waargenomen tijdens deze periode. Het vuren was nogal krampachtig en gebeurde voornamelijk op de 1^e vuurlinie, het front; het reffen in de achterhoede gebeurde in veel mindee mate. Geen van deze artilleriegroepen was ervaren genoeg, alhoewel era f en toe toch enkele granaten binnen het Battalion geboed vielen.

B. Air Force/Luftwaffe:

Drie nacht bombardementen werden door de Luftwaffe uitgevoerd met als gevolg de nodige personele en materiële schade.
