October 1-3	CONTINUATION OF THE ATTACK ON GERMANY The XIX Corps continued the attack on the Siegfried Line. The 113^th Cavalry Group, attached to the 29^th Infantry Division, held a defensive position on the left flank of the Corps sector. The 111^th Field Artillery Battalion, from a position occupied on September 30, 1944 west of SITTARD, HOLLAND (666692, Sheet 48), continued in direct support of the 125^th Cavalry Squadron and the 744^th Tank Battalion, elements of the 113^th Cavalry Group.
October 4-11	On October 4, 1944 this Battalion was relieved of direct support to the 113^th Cavalry Squadron and the 744^th Tank Battalion. A displacement was made to positions at WEHR, GERMANY (724678, Sheet 48), crossing the German Border for the first time this date. At 16.00A hours this Battalion assumed responsibility for the fires of the 224^th Field Artillery Battalion while they displaced to new positions. Several call missions were fired during a sharp local attack by the enemy along the boundary between the 175^th Infantry and 113^th Cavalry Squadron. The attack was repulsed. The Battalion Commander assumed responsibility for coordination of artillery support of the 113^th Cavalry Group this date.
October 12	Hostile harassing artillery fires fell in the Battalion area on October 7, 10, 11 and 12, 1944. Four casualties were sustained by A-Battery on the latter date.The Battalion displaced to new positions West of SCHINVELD, HOLLAND (757657, Sheet 48), on October 12, 1944, and continued the mission of direct support from this position during the remainder of the period.
October 17	At 18.00A hours on October 17, 1944 the 111^th Battalion supported the 3^rd Battalion, 115^thInfantry in an attack on the town of BUSSCHERHEIDE/BREBEREN, GERMANY (774707, Sheet 48), with the mission of killing or capturing the garrison thereof, destroying the bridge at (777711, Sheet 48), and returning to our lines. Considerable smoke was fired to cover the attack and call missions were fired almost continuously during the assault. The mission was partially successful; the town was entered but the bridge was not destroyed. NOTE: Private John S Hemstreet was killed in this attack on BUSSCHERHEIDE/BREBEREN; his jeep hit a landmine. John was reported Missing In Action at first.
October 31	Approximately 50 rounds of enemy harassing fire fell in the vicinity of the Battalion area on the late afternoon of October 31, 1944. There were no casualties.
Enemy Forces	Enemy forces on the front were those units which opposed the 113^thCavalry Group.Enemy artillery was moderate throughout this period with calibers light, medium and occasionally a few rounds of heavy. A majority of the rounds fell on front line elements; some harassing fire fell in our position area. A few battery concentrations were noted.

Miscellaneous	A. FIRING RECORDS A total of 1.550 missions with an expenditure of 10.934 rounds was fired during the month of October 1944.B. BATTLE LESSONS In the assault on BUSSCHERHEIDE on October 17, 1944 the chief significance of this operation from an artillery standpoint was the employment of Smoke HC M84. Fortunately there was an opportunity to adjust the smoke by Air OP prior to the attack. After conference with the Infantry Heavy Weapons CO Commander, it was decided to use artillery smoke on flank and 81mm Mortar WP directly to the front of the advancing Infantry. One Battery fired on each flank, each gun being laid on a different point about 60 yards apart. Wind velocity was approximately 30mph. Rate of fire: one round per gun every two minutes. At the time of adjustment wind direction was nearly perfect being parallel to the axis of advance. Unfortunately about 45 minutes before the jump-off, which came at dusk, the wind changed 1000 mils which made it nearly perpendicular to the axis of advance. This no doubt accounted for the reports of the Infantry CO CO’s who were interviewed afterwards by the Battalion CO. The CO upwind reported not quite enough smoke and the one downwind claimed a bit too much. Both were fairly well satisfied. The following conclusions can be drawn: To use HC Smoke effectively time must be allowed for careful coordination with the Infantry and adjustment by ground or air observer, Firing each gun on a separate point is far better than concentrating Battery on one point, With velocity up to 30mph-35mph one round every two minutes apparently provides a dense enough concentration (assuming wind direction is suitable for employment of smoke in the first place), Request to lift smoke or change the location of it must come from Infantry CO Commander who should be so informed prior to the attack.

Oktober 4-11	Op 4 oktober 1944 werd dit Battalion ontheven van de directe ondersteuning van het 113^th Cavalry Squadron en het 744^th Tank Battalion. Een verplaatsing vond plaats naar posities bij WEHR, DUITSLAND (724678, Sheet 48),waarbij voor het eerst de Duitse grens op deze datum werd gepasseerd. Om 16.00 uur nam het Battalion de verantwoording voor beschietingen over van het 224^th Field Artillery Battalion zodat zij zich ondertussen verplaatsten naar nieuwe posities. Verschillende call missions werden uitgevoerd tijdens een felle lokale aanval door de vijand langs de grens tussen de 175^th Infantry en het 113^th Cavalry Squadron. De aanval werd afgeslagen. De Battalion Commander nam de verantwoordelijkheid voor de coördinatie van artillerie ondersteuning van de 113^th Cavalry Group op deze datum.
Oktober 12	Vijandig intimiderend Artillery vuur viel in het gebied van het Battalion op 7, 10, 11 en 12 oktober 1944. Vier slachtoffers werden geteld bij A-Battery op de laatstgenoemde datum.Het Battalion verplaatste zich naar nieuwe posities ten westen van SCHINVELD, NEDERLAND (757657, Sheet 48), op 12 oktober 1944, en continueerde haar taak in directe ondersteuning vanuit haar positie gedurende het restant van de periode.
Oktober 17	Om 18.00 uur op 17 oktober 1944 ondersteunde het 111^th Battalion het 3^rd Battalion, 115^thInfantry in een aanval op de dorpen BUSSCHERHEIDE/BREBEREN, DUITSLAND (774707, Sheet 48), met als opdracht het garnizoen aldaar gevangen te nemen of te vermoorden, de brug op (777711, Sheet 48) te vernielen en uiteindelijk terug te keren naar onze linies. Aanzienlijke rook werd afgevuurd om de aanval te ondersteunen/af te schermen en call missions werden afgevuurd bijna continu tijdens deze actie. Deze missie was slechts gedeeltelijk succesvol; het dorp werd binnengevallen maar de brug werd niet vernield. OPMERKING: Private John S Hemstreet sneuvelde tijdens deze aanval op BUSSCHERHEIDE/BREBEREN; zijn jeep kwam op een landmijn terecht. John werd in eerste instantie als Missing In Action (MIA) gemeld.
Oktober 31	Ongeveer 50 granaten van vijandelijke beschietingen vielen in de buurt van het Battalion gebied op de late namiddag van 31 oktober 1944. Er vielen geen slachtoffers.
Vijand	Vijandelijke troepen aan het front waren die eenheden die tegenstand boden aan de 113^thCavalry Group.Vijandelije artillerie was middelmatig gedurende deze periode met lichte kalibers, medium en incidenteel enkele schoten van het zware kaliber. Het merendeel van de granaten viel op de fronttroepen; enkele beschietingen kwamen binnen ons gebied terecht. Er werden enkele Battery-stellingen opgemerkt.

Diversen	A. FIRING RECORDS Een totaal van 1.550 beschietingen met een totaal van 10.934 schoten werden afgevuurd tijdens de maand oktober 1944. B. BATTLE LESSONS Tijdens de aanval op BUSSCHERHEIDE op 17 oktober 1944 was de belangrijkste gewichtigheid van deze operatie vanuit een artillerie standpunt het gebruik van Smoke HC M84. Gelukkig was er de mogelijkheid om voorafgaande aan de aanval de rook door Air OP aan te passen. Na overleg met de Infantry Heavy Weapons CO Commander, werd besloten om artillerie rook te gebruiken op de flank en 81mm Mortar WP rechtstreeks op het front van de oprukkende Infantry. Er vuurde per flank een Battery, elk kanon gericht op een verschillend doelwit ongeveer 60 yards van elkaar. Windsnelheid was ongeveer 30 miles per uur. Vuursnelheid: een schot per kanon per twee minuten. Voor de start van de actie was de windrichting bijna perfect parallel aan de as van de aanval. Ongeveer 45 minuten voor de start, welke begon in de schemering, veranderde jammergenoeg de windrichting waardoor de wind bijna loodrecht op de as van de aanval blies. Dit is ongetwijfeld goed voor de verslagen van de Infantry CO’s die na afloop geïnterviewd werden door de Battalion CO. De CO op de locatie ‘tegen de wind in’ meldde niet genoeg rook, de CO op locatie ‘benedenwinds’ beweerde juist een beetje teveel rook. Beiden waren redelijk tevreden. De volgende conclusies kunnen getrokken worden: Om het gebruik van HC Smoke effectief te maken moet er voldoende tijd beschikbaar zijn voor een zorgvuldige coördinatie tussen de Artillery en Infantry en af- en bijstelling door zowel grond- als luchtwaarnemers, Het is effectiever om elk kanon op een apart doelwit te laten schieten dan beschietingen door een hele Battery op 1 punt, Met een windsnelheid tot 30mph-35mph geeft een schot per twee minuten een voldoende dichtheid van het rookgordijn, er vanuit gaande dat in eerste instantie de windrichting goed genoeg is voor de werking van de rook, De algehele leiding over deze actie dient ten allen tijde te liggen bij de Infantry Commanding Officer; hij dient continue op de hoogte te worden gehouden worden door alle betrokken eenheden.
