Details:
Helder had de overhand in oktober, en 34 vliegtuigen gingen naar Spandau. Vanaf 26.000 voet lokaliseerde de Group het doelwit, en gooide de bommen in de rook achtergelaten door het bombardement van de vorige groepen. Met uitstekende resultaten.
In tegenstelling tot eerdere missies in 1944 waren er nu geen vijandelijke vliegtuigen om een bombardement te voorkomen, en de gebruikelijke intensiteit van luchtafweer boven Berlijnse doelwitten was verminderd naar gemiddeld. “Big B” was gewoon een van de vele lange-afstands doelen geworden.

“Yes sir, vandaag was het doel de “BIG B” (Berlijn). Briefing was om 4.30 uur in de ochtend. Je had de blikken op de gezichten van de mannen moeten zien toen we hoorden wat ons doelwit was. We vlogen op 26.000 voet met 34 graden onder nul. Luchtafweer was sterk als een hel. Ze schoten op alles wat los of vast zat. Ik was doodsbang, en dat lieg ik niet. Iedereen was het. Berlijn was een doelwit met 476 luchtafweergeschutten op jou gericht plus nog eens alle wapens boven in de lucht (van de jagers). Mijn God, als er nog een paar bij zouden komen was de hele lucht vol geweest met dat spul. Overigens we kwamen er goed vanaf. We ontweken de luchtafweer best goed, en hadden uiteindelijk slechts 5 gaten als schade. Dat was echt geluk. God was met ons de hele tijd. We hebben allemaal gebeden. Echt iedereen van ons, en als ik het niet had gedaan twijfel ik of we het wel gered hadden. BEDANKT.”

Details:
Clear weather prevailed in October, and 34 planes went to Spandau. From 26.000 feet the Group pin-pointed the target, and dropped in the smoke left by preceding Groups. With excellent results.
A far cry from the early missions of 1944, there were no enemy planes to harass a bomb run, and the usual intense flak found over Berlin targets had subsided to moderate and tracking fire. Big “B” had become just another long haul.

“Yes Sir, today was the Big “B”. Briefing was at 4:30 AM. You should have seen the looks on the faces of the men, when we heard what our target was. We were on 26.000 foot with a 34 degrees. The flak was heavy as hell. They shot up everything but the kitchen sink. I was scared as hell, and I’m not kidding. Every man was. Berlin was a target with 476 ack ack guns on you plus all the guns up there. My, if there were any more they’d have the sky full of the stuff. By the way we jumped around we did OK. We dodge that flak pretty good, and only got five holes out of it. That was luck. God was with us all the way. We all prayed. Everyone of us, and if I didn’t, I doubt if we would have made it.
