De 111th FA was klaar met inschepen op APAS; de 13 DUKW’s en 60% van de overige voertuigen (“organic transportations”) werden op LST’s geladen. Het Battalion werd als rechtstreeks gekoppeld aan het 116th Infanttry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division; hun landingzone was Omaha Beach, Normandië, Frankrijk; sector Dog Green, Dog White, Dog Red en Easy Green. |
Juni 6 | D-Day, Normandy, France: landing op Europese continent
De commandant en andere kleine eenheden landen tussen H+30 en H+90 minuten. H-Hour was op 6.30 uur in de ochtend op 6 juni 1944.De 12 howitzers, het personeel van deze kanonnen, en een groep bestaande uit manschappen van het Fire Direction Center en Communications van Headquarters Battery stonden gepland voor H+110 minutes in de 13 DUKW’s.Door de ruwe zee en de zware lading zonken al 11 DUWK’s binnen de zogenaamde Transportation Area; de resterende 2 DUKW’s, 1 van “A” en 1 van “C” Batteries arriveerden volgens het tijdschema aan het strand, maar waren niet in staat te landen aan het strand door de vijandige acties. De “A” Battery DUKW zonk voor de kust door vijandige beschietingen en de “C” Battery DUKW ging terug naar open zee en meerde bij een Rhino Ferry aan; nadat de howitzer veilig gesteld was aan boord van de Rhino ferry zonk de DUKW alsnog.De “organic vehicles” en personeel van Force “O”, plus de meerderheid van het personeel dat in de DUKW’s zou landen, arriveerde op het strand rond 17.00 uur D-Day met 3 Rhino Ferries. 2 Rhino Ferries kwamen aan het strand en lagen meteen onder zwaar vijandelijk vuur ; slechts een Ferry lukte het de lading te lossen op het strand met een verlies van 11 voertuigen en 1 L-4 Cub vliegtuigje. De overige 2 Rhino Ferries werden teruggeroepen naar open zee en verbleven door de nacht over; zij landden de volgende dag, D+1, om 12.20 en 14.00 uur (7 juni).

Juni 13 | Govin/St. Claire-sur-L’Elle/Couvains: Hernieuwde inzet in de strijd
Het Battalion kreeg laat in de avond van 13 juni 1944 het bericht dat ze opnieuw zouden worden ingezet in de strijd; ze werden verplaatst naar bezette gebied bij Govin als directe artillerie ondersteuning van het 116thInfantry Regiment, welke een defensieve stelling had ingenomen bij St. Clair-sur-L’Elle/Couvains.“C” Battery startte als eerste om 06.18 uur op 14 juni 1944 en opende gedurende 2 dagen het vuur op Duitse stellingen vooral als intimidatie. |
Juni 15 – 20 | St. Claire-sur-L’Elle
Op 15 juni 1944 werd het Battalion verplaatst naar posities in de buurt van St. Clair-sur-L’Elle en vervolgde vanaf hier de beschietingen tot 20 juni 1944.Artillerie voorbereidende beschietingen werden gedaan van 06.05 tot 06.48 uur voorafgaande aan een aanval door de Infantry met als doel de hoog gelegen gebieden noordelijk van St. André de l’Epine te veroveren (Hill 120). Dit gebied werd veroverd en verdedigd voor de rest van deze periode. |
Juni 20 – 30 | St. André de L’Epine Tijdens de periode van 14 tot 30 juni, 1944 vuurde het Battalion 432 missies met een totaal munitie van 5633 rondes. Observatie was moeilijk gedurende deze periode. |
Vijand | De vijandelijke troepen in dit gebied tijdens deze maanden bestonden uit de 716th, 352nd en 353rd Divisions en delen van de 3e en 5e Paratroop Divisions. Het totaal aantal door de 111thFA gevangen genomen manschappen bedroeg de ene officier en 59 dienstplichtigen op 8 juni, 1944.De vijandelijke artillerie bestond voornamelijk uit krampachtig gebruik van gemotoriseerde kanonnen. |

June 6 | D-Day, Normandy, France: assault on continent of Europe
The Commander and other small parties landed between H+30 minutes and H+90 minutes. H-hour was at 6.30 hour in the morning of June 6, 1944.The 12 Howitzers, firing Battery personnel and a party consisting of members of the Fire Direction Center and Communications personnel from Headquarters Battery were scheduled to land in the 13 DUKW’s at H+110 minutes.Due to Heavy sea 11 DUWK’s sank in the Transport Area; the remaining 2, one each of “A” and “C” Batteries arrived at the beach on schedule, but were unable to land due to enemy actions. The “A” Battery DUKW was sunk by enemy gun-fire and the “C” Battery DUKW put to sea and tied up alongside a Rhino Ferry; after the Howitzer had been salvaged, the DUKW also sank.The organic vehicles and personnel of Force “O”, plus the majority of the personnel scheduled to land in the DUKW’s, arrived at the beach at 17.00 Hours D-Day on three Rhino Ferries. Two Rhino Ferries touched-down and were immediately under heavy enemy artillery fire; one succeeded in unloading with a loss of 11 vehicles and 1 L-4 Cub plane. The remaining 2 Rhino Ferries were ordered back to sea and remained over-night, landing on D+1 at 12.20 and 14.00 hours. (June 7) |

June 13 | Govin/St. Claire-sur-L’Elle/Couvains: Recommitment to Action
The Battalion was recommitted to action late in the evening of June 13, 1944 to occupied positions near Govin, and became direct support artillery to the 116thInfantry Regiment who held a defensive position near St. Clair-sur-L’Elle/Couvains.The initial registration was completed by “C” battery at 06.18 hours on June 14, 1944 and firing for the succeeding 2 days was mainly of a harassing nature. |
June 15 – 20 | St. Claire-sur-L’Elle
The Battalion displaced to positions in the vicinity of St. Clair-sur-L’Elle on June 15 and continued interdiction and harassing fires until June 20, 1944.An Artillery preparation was fired from 06.05 to 06.48 hours June 20 prior to an attack to seize the high ground, Hill 120, North of St. Andrë de L’Epine. The objective was seized and defended for the remainder of the period. |
June 20 – 30 | St. André de L’Epine
During the period June 14 to June 30, 1044 the Battalion fired 432 missions with a total ammunition expenditure of 5633 rounds. Observation was poor throughout the period. |

Total prisoners taken by the 111thFA were 1 officer and 59 enlisted men on June 8, 1944.Enemy Artillery consisted mostly of self-propelled guns employed spasmodically. |
